All the stuff and more

Neither of us are young, as the beige fleeces, sensible shoes and ‘the hospital years’ got closer we looked for a way out. We wanted to do something with our professional experience. Volunteering was a perfect solution, but what to do with the house and more pressingly what to do with all the stuff that we had built up over thirty years together? Not only our stuff but our grown up daughters belongings too.

Renting out the house would boost our volunteers allowance. But houses in our area are rented unfurnished; help! We looked at many storage companies, they were expensive and inflexible, we wanted something that would be easy to get to, local and open any time we wanted and of course secure. Someone told us about the Barn Store near Cranbrook, they had seen the sign on the road, it was five minutes drive from our house, a lock up container inside a dry barn that we could fill as we wanted; perfect. It was well lit and we could drive right up to the container itself day or night. Claire who runs it was really helpful and positive (you can feel a bit wobbly sometimes putting everything you own into store) and could even supply me with the names of reliable local van drivers, and there was tea and coffee and a loo.

We filled the container up bit by bit, put the last odds and ends in the night before we left (gardening tools take up a lot space), hard work but we had the space in the barn itself to lay things out and pack them in properly. It all worked well.

Our old life, packed away in one twenty foot container.

Surprisingly we are now placed in a house that is about twice the size of our original family home in Kent. It looks a bit empty, but I expect we will fill this one in the two years we are here. Uganda is a beautiful place, volunteering is a fascinating process.

I would heartily recommend it and of course the Barn Store.

We write a blog about life here, lots of photos about it all:

Barn Store, Warman case study, 14aug13

Safe secure storage is plain sailing for sea-faring couple

When a Hampshire husband and wife decided to follow their dreams and sail to the other side of the world they had to rent out their house unfurnished and find somewhere to store their belongings.

Andy and Sue Warman set off from Portsmouth to the South Pacific in 2009 in their Hallberg Rassy 42 boat called Spruce but not before they began the search for a safe and dry storage location.

Spruce                                            Sue searching for Andy’s shoes!

They looked at several options but were reluctant to use a faceless chain of retail park storage units.

Fortunately the couple discovered Barn Store thanks to a simple poster on a telegraph pole and after looking on the website and the visiting the office to discuss their requirements, they decided it was the right place for their belongings.

So in March 2011, Andy and Sue began renting an 80 sq ft storage unit on a rolling monthly basis at Barn Store's Fareham site.

Andy said, "It was all very easy and helpful. The farm location means there are people living on site who know their customers and have an interest in tailoring the service to meet their needs.

"We like the fact that they offer a professional service with a personal touch. We have peace of mind knowing we store our belongings in a secure facility and can visit during each trip back to the UK to drop things off and collect items as required. The individual containers are secure and dry and there's plenty of room to wheel a trolley full of items in to the facility," he added.

Sue, who is an artist, and Andy, who enjoys a technical challenge, have so far visited the Caribbean, USA and Canada on their adventures. During this year they will be making their way across the Pacific to New Zealand calling at the Galapagos Islands, French Polynesia, the Cook Islands and Tonga.

Martin Bazeley, Barn Store's Manager said, "Andy and Sue's situation is particularly fascinating, exciting and interesting and we enjoy following their blog from our office.

"Finding somewhere you can trust with all your worldly possessions can be stressful however we are delighted they discovered and chose Barn Store and that we have met, and continue to meet, their expectations," added Martin.

Customers can benefit from Barn Store's 24 hour access, safe secure conditions and flexible storage options. Every storage unit at Barn Store has a heavy duty steel lock cowl which prevents the padlock from interference and it is housed within a fully enclosed building equipped with alarm beams and sensors. It is also monitored by CCTV cameras 24 hours a day.

All units are on ground level so customers don't have to negotiate stairs or lifts with heavy or bulky items, and the passageways are not only well-lit, clean and dry but are wider than most storage facilities.

Richard Notton case study, 6aug13

Barn Store provides solution for hobby and house move

Searching for and buying a dream home in France is exciting but when storage is needed for the entire contents of a house and bulky hobby equipment, it can add to the challenge.

However Barn Store met this challenge by providing a made to measure storage solution for Richard Notton and his family.

The Nottons wanted to sell their Hampshire home before relocating across the Channel. This meant they not only needed sufficient space for all their furniture and personal effects but with Richard's hobby as an amateur radio ham, they needed storage for a 175 foot tall tower in sections of 22 feet each.

Before they had sold their house in Wickham, Richard and his family approached Barn Store with their requirements. The plan was to complete the sale of their home in this country before searching for a house in southern France, so storage was needed until they found and purchased their ideal property.

Barn Store's 24 hour access, safe secure conditions and flexible storage options sealed the deal for the Nottons so in July 2012, they began renting a 160 sq ft storage unit at Barn Store's Fareham site.

Richard said, "Barn Store made things so easy and we were most impressed. It was so simple to get set up thanks to Jane and Martin who solved all our specific and unusual problems.

"We were particularly concerned about the size and weight of my radio equipment but the facilities are excellent and we never had a moment's worry about our possessions," he added.

Martin Bazeley, Barn Store's Manager said, "Richard came to us with very specific  storage requirements and we were more than happy to help while the necessary proceedings took place both here and in France.

"We were also delighted to assist when the lorry arrived to transport their belongings to their new home. We loaded the radio tower into the base of the lorry and packed their other belongings around it before it set off on the 560 mile journey to France," added Martin.

Window Workshop case study, 11jul13

Window Workshop - Windows, Doors, Conservatories in Waterlooville

Barn Store solves Window Workshop's space shortage

Having sufficient space is essential to the success of a business so when a Waterlooville based double glazing company needed additional storage, Barn Store provided a clear solution.

Window Workshop is a family run home improvements company which specialises in double glazing installations and repairs for clients in Hampshire and West Sussex.

The company, which is a member of CheckaTrade, required additional storage facilities in order to work more efficiently and it was whilst searching online that Steve Lymer, Window Workshop's Managing Director, discovered Barn Store.

Barn Store's 24 hour access, good road links and safe secure conditions were just some of the factors which ticked the boxes for Steve. So in April 2012, Window Workshop began renting a 20x8 ft storage unit at Barn Store's Fareham site.

Steve said, "The Barn Store website was extremely helpful and the facilities on offer were exactly what we were looking for. The location was ideal and easy to access, the staff are very helpful and the site security is excellent."

Every storage unit has a heavy duty steel lock cowl which prevents the padlock from interference and is under cover in a north facing open fronted building to protect from the elements, whilst allowing easy vehicle access to the front of every unit.

And loading or unloading in dark winter mornings is not a problem for Window Workshop thanks to floodlights along the front of the shed.

"Having a unit at Barn Store has been great for business as the extra space has allowed us to work more efficiently at a low cost. And having round the clock access has been invaluable," added Steve.

Barn Store has also provided a neat bay for skips which Window Workshop and other commercial customers have a skip delivered to for their waste.

Martin Bazeley, Barn Store's Manager said, "We're delighted to have been able to help Window Workshop increase its efficiency by providing the extra space they were looking for in a secure, convenient and peaceful location."
